League of Eternals is…

… outdated?
But, they aren’t even published yet. ROFLMAO
OMG, ok, so I decided to open up LoE today. (You know, that book series I initially wanted to start with as a writer but can’t let it into the world because it’s my baby.)
I had 1 and 1/3 stories in the series rough drafted as of, well, let’s not name years. I didn’t realize how long ago I finished book 1 until I got the bug up my ass to open the file.
Let’s just say the Sahara was still around the year I started Grant & Mac’s story and finished their rough draft shortly after the Sahara was no more.
(It’s mentioned in the first paragraph of the book and had an impact on a pivotal part of their history, so, um, yeah, rewrites will be needed for more reasons than my skill as a writer then.)
I just found it interesting and wanted to share.
If you are not familiar with LoE at all, they are eternal beings from different points in time who are currently living in Vegas kicking team evil’s ass, while making all the ladies…and some dudes, swoon. There’s a knight for the 1700s, a privateer from the 1800s, a cop from the 80s, a cowboy from the 90s, a male stripper from the 2000s, and a Fremont street celebrity impersonator from no one knows, who looks a hell of a lot like a murdered rapper. There are others, but we have to keep some things a secret.
Anyway, when I opened the file and was met with my partial character board, I just had to let y’all see it.
(The people in the pictures do not endorse me or even fucking know me. These are inspirational pics ONLY.)

Do You Smell That?

If you’ve followed me from my very first book or if you’ve chatted with me at an invent, you probably know scent in my books is a big thing for me.
The way my characters smell is described in each book. Becuase scent matters to me, from the start of this journey, I’ve custom blended melts for every one of my main characters.
These little wax melts smell exactly as I imagine my characters do. I give them away with the purchase of their corresponding books.

I always believed, as a reader, if I could smell the characters I love as I read it would add a layer to the experience. Like an awesome immersive experience, so as a writer I try to give that to my readers with these melts.

I have a giveaway about it going on right now on my Facebook profile. Go find the original post to enter. https://www.facebook.com/verlene.landon

OSCAR MIKE by Verlene Landon

As a soldier, Cassie was always on the move, but when her husband was killed in an explosion overseas, her life stalled.

She lost her best friend that day and had nowhere to turn in her time of grief.

Rob, Jeff, and Cassie had been inseparable in high school. When Jeff and Cassie became a couple, and Rob realized his feeling ran deeper than just friends, they drifted apart.

But fate was cruel and spiteful. Ending up in the same unit as the “happy” couple was hell. Not being able to act on his feelings for Cassie? Pure torture. When a new assignment brought him and Jeff to London, Rob was excited, but losing his leg and watching Jeff die in his arms took his life in another direction.

Now he has a secret, one he isn’t sure Cassie can forgive him for.

Will Cassie allow herself to find love with the one person who can truly make her feel? Or will Rob’s secret destroy any chance of a happy ending, and send Cassie running?

Man hugging woman in underwear.

Whew, October!

October was so busy, I can’t share everything in the newsletter so I am making this post about signings so you can see some of the pics.

October 7 was Brew City Book Signing in Milwaukee, WI.

I hit up the Harley Museum the day before and meet some awesome authors and readers at the event. My room sucked, it had mold, but it couldn’t ruin my weekend.

October 14 was Arch City Book Signing in Columbus, OH.

WOW, such a good time. I got to hang with some of my favorite people and saw the best drag show ever!

October 21 was Desert & Wine with the author at Vegas Valley.

I got to sit and chat with an amazing woman over cupcakes and hear some interesting information from other authors.

October 28 was Love N Vegas, right here in my hometown.

What a way to close out my year of signings. This event was ah-mazing. I hope to get an invite in the future.

Author Questions Answered (Music)

Answering the author questions I get asked the most. I am in no way indicating that I speak for the community as a whole. As authors are diverse, so are their answers. This/these is/are simply mine.

MUSIC

Modern Computer Station

  • What do you listen to when you write? Do you have a writing playlist?

This is probably one of the top 5 questions I get asked. Almost every questionnaire I receive has it, many readers ask it, and I always want to know about my favorite books/authors too.

For me, I don’t have a set writing playlist, rather each couple/book has their/its own unique playlist. More often than not, music is my first introduction to them, the first thing they share with me. I get to know them through their music before they let me in on their story. Music is, for me, an intimate way to get to know people in real life, so why not my characters? They don’t always give me their entire library, but a song here or there, and once I have enough to get a feel for them, I immerse myself in that music, even when it is totally not my personal taste. Not only when I am actively writing, but when I’m in the car, riding Lemmy, or working out. That playlist is on a loop, and at some point, I mesh with them on a different level, and then their story begins to take on new layers. I continue listening to the playlist until the book is finished.

FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS

  • Do you always connect through music?

Yes and no.

Yes, because I always need to connect through music for my character to have depth. For me to even understand them and tell their story, I have to feel their music.

No, because sometimes I can’t. When I find myself skipping songs repeatedly, I suffer character block. I can’t get a real feel for them. Currently, I find myself skipping songs on my WiP playlist or just turning it off, causing me to not be able to connect to one of my main characters. I can’t write them when I can’t connect and sadly, music is my main bridge.

  • Why isn’t it in the back of your book? Can (do) you share it?

I have read books with a playlist in the back matter, and while I personally love the idea, I am not sure of all the legalities about doing it myself. I would rather put my money in editing, covers, and marketing than to pay a lawyer to find out or to handle it if I do so without full knowledge and have to pay. (Yes, there is always Google, but I prefer not to rely on an internet search for legal advise.) Besides, I do share the playlists. I have them on Spotify, I also share them on my Facebook page and Pinterest. However, I am going to start sharing them here. (I’ll get my back-lists up this week.)

  • Do your characters only listen to your favorite music?

No, sometimes they listen to songs that make me want to drive rusty railroad spikes through my eardrums, but it’s not about what I like, it’s all about getting in touch with them.

Second Chances & First Impressions

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

We all know that old saying, right?

While I agree with it in fact, I don’t feel it is truly factual, or wholly factual? I should say. I have broken this rule myself, and let’s face it, an up and coming writer has to bank on it being broken.

While I agree this saying holds true for say, a 32 year old interviewing for the CFO of a muti-billion dollar company, I think (and pray) there are cases where this is, well, not the case.

As much as I agree with the once-a-dick-always-a-dick kind of thing, there are circumstances where I think; no, not really.

Like the dick I dated at 17 with a black Trans Am, Member’s Only jacket, and bad boy attitude in full bloom. He was a HUGE DICK back then, and if you would’ve ask me at 17, or even at 25, I would’ve said he was a pox riddled dick that needed to masturbate with a chainsaw. However, he turned out to be a really great guy later in life. Faithful husband (as far as I know), devoted dad and not the party favor prison bitch I killed a chicken and danced naked in the moonlight, while praying to unseen forces he’d become.

Same with actors, writers and other artists. I hated some of their early work. There were times I wanted to jump through the movie screen and strangle the fuck out of an overacting, wooden bastard, whom I now go all gooey eyed and wet Victorias over. No, I will not mention specifics, but I said more than once that they would never become anyone and I would never spend a dime on their work. WRONGO – Same with some of my absolute FAVORITE authors, again, I will not name names. I will say that one book was so bad, (IN MY OPINION), some passages are still a running joke in my house, but I read every word they’ve written since then faithfully, and stalk them creepily on social media.

Why?

Because like Trans Am dick, they grew. And as they did, they changed. In the case of artists, got better in their craft. So while that first impression is there, and it’s true that it will never go away, I do not believe that is always all she wrote, fat lady singing, and curtain closing type final.

When it’s an arena where you can grow, whether literally or metaphorically, I think this saying shouldn’t apply.

While I like to think I am the greatest author in the world, the truth of the matter is,  I’m not even close. BUT, what I am, is growing. Growing with every sentence and I hope I never stop doing so. Just reading the 2 books I’ve published, I see tremendous growth. And that’s saying something considering I think I’m the Muhammad Ali of authors. LOL (actually I don’t, I’m very insecure in that arena)

The problem I face as a just starting out, independent author, is getting people to know when to apply the first impression thing and when to fucking throw it out the window.

I’ve heard that many authors (even some big ones) go back and entirely re-write their first books because they personally think they are awful. Now, if authors themselves find them horrid, then why should little ole me expect all the readers in the world to find my first book brilliant?

The truth is I never did. I was so blown away by the people who enjoyed it, I cried, yes, me who only cries over fictional characters and my kids, cried over real people. While the bad reviews stung, still do. (I’m being nice by saying sting, they fucking burn like a bitch.) I expected them, prepared for them, the best I could anyway, but I never prepared for people to say nice things, so when they did, my soul ate that shit up like warm Krispy Kremes at 3am. And in doing so, it made the bad so much worse. I got a taste of something sweet that I never anticipated, making the expected more bitter.

But even worse than the taste in my mouth, is the fact that some people will never know that I can do better, am doing better.

As long as we grow and learn, we are better. And that applies to EVERYTHING in life.

So, I have a proposal for anyone with who (whom? I never know which) I made a bad first impression.

  • If you wrote a review before this date and didn’t enjoy my first book, zip me an e-mail. Verlene.Landon@gmail.com
  • Let me know you left an I-Was-Not-Impressed review and why, (the why helps me grow) and I will send you my second book FREE, to see if maybe we just got off on the wrong foot and if I’ve grown as an author in a way you might appreciate.
  • If you’re still not a fan after you read book 2, at least you gave me a second chance and I thank you for that. That is more than some people ever get.

Well, I’m off to work on book 3 (which by the way will be better than 1 & 2) and maybe save the citizens of Solstheim from the evil Miraak.
